History of World Disability Day
The United Nations General Assembly declared 1981 as the “International Year of Persons with Disabilities”. Subsequently, a plan was formulated to emphasize revival, prevention, publicity and equality opportunities for people with disabilities at national, regional and international levels.
The theme of “full participation and equality” was chosen for the international celebration of persons with disabilities. Under this theme, the focus was on equalizing opportunities for the disabled in the society, making people aware of their rights and improving their socio-economic status, along with focusing on their health like ordinary citizens.
The United Nations General Assembly declared the United Nations Decade for the Disabled from 1983 to 1992 to provide a goal for governments and organizations to implement the activities recommended in the World Program. After this, from 1992 to December 3, World Day of Divyang was celebrated.
World Disability Day Theme 2019
The theme of the Divyang Day this year, according to the UN official website, is “Promoting the leadership and participation of persons with disabilities: Taking action on the development agenda of 2030”. This topic focuses on the empowerment of persons with disabilities for inclusive, equal and sustainable development in the 2030 Agenda, which resolves to ‘leave no one behind’ and recognizes disability as cross-cutting issues.
Why is there a need to celebrate World Disabled Day
Most people do not know how many disabled people are there in their neighborhood. Whether they are getting their rights in the society or not. To get good health and self respect, they need help from other people present in the society but usually people do not do so. Therefore, World Disabled Day is celebrated to inform and inform the general public about the actual condition of the disabled.
