SPG security of Gandhi family removed two weeks ago
It is to be noted that two weeks ago, the government removed the SPG security given to Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi since 1991 and has been replaced with ZP security of CRPF. The Congress is continuously opposing this decision of the government and terming it politically motivated.
The bill to amend the SPG Act will be presented in Parliament
On Friday, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal told the Lok Sabha that the bill related to amendment of the SPG Act has been included in next week’s list of House proceedings. In this, the provision of providing SPG protection to the family members of the former Prime Minister will be removed. According to sources, the SPG law will not change the provision of providing SPG security till one year after the ex-prime minister is released or on the basis of threat assessment.
Decision to remove SPG after assessment of danger
The decision to amend the SPG Act came soon after the removal of SPG protection of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. At that time, it was clarified by the government that the threat assessment of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi was done annually last month, in which the security agencies found that the danger of these three was relatively less and their safety was SPG Can be given to another agency instead. Based on this, the Home Ministry decided to provide ZP plus security of CRPF to these three instead of SPG.
SPG Force was formed in 1988
Significantly, after the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at the hands of security guards, a separate force called Special Protection Force (SPG) was formed in 1988 to protect the Prime Minister. Rajiv Gandhi’s SPG security was withdrawn after he stepped down from the post of Prime Minister.
SPG Act was amended after Rajiv’s assassination
After the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi during the election campaign, the SPG Act was amended in 1991 to provide SPG protection to former Prime Ministers as well as Rajiv Gandhi’s family i.e. Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. The SPG’s security has since been provided to the Gandhi family.
Vajpayee government made a big amendment in SPG law
The major amendment to the SPG Act was followed in 1999 during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government after small amendments in 1994. In which the security of former Prime Ministers was limited to one year after leaving the post. After this, a provision was made to increase SPG security on the basis of hazard assessment every year.
Former PM Manmohan’s SPG security withdrawn and CRPF’s Z Plus security given
Apparently after this, SPG security of former Prime Ministers like VP Singh, Chandrasekhar, HD Deve Gowda was withdrawn on the basis of threat assessment from time to time. Manmohan Singh continued to receive SPG protection for five years after he stepped down as Prime Minister in 2014, but was given CRPF’s Z Plus security in August after the threat assessment.
