What is the history of this day?

World Peace Day was first observed in the year 1982, for which the theme ‘Right to Peace of People’ was chosen. Actually, the United Nations had announced to celebrate World Peace Day in order to maintain peace between all the countries and citizens of the world. Although initially from 1982 to 2001, this day was celebrated on the third Tuesday of September, but since 2002, the day has been fixed on 21 September, after which every year on 21 September. World peace day started being celebrated.

Importance of World Peace Day

White pigeons are considered messengers of peace, so on this day, flying white pigeons are conveyed the message of peace to the world. This year, on the International Day of Peace, the United Nations has called for initiatives to tackle climate change and awareness about it. On this special occasion, through #PeaceDay and #ClimateAction, every citizen of the world can share their thoughts and activities with the United Nations, taking initiative in tackling climate change.

Significantly, the former Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, also gave five basic mantras to establish peace in the world, which is called the Panchsheel principle. Apart from this, non-aggressive action against each other, non-interference in each other’s internal matters, adhere to the policy of equality and mutual benefit, and peace in the world can be established by believing in the policy of peaceful co-existence.
