Trump: India, China no longer developing countries, won’t let WTO benefit: US President Donald Trump has said that India and China are no longer developing countries, so they should not benefit from the WTO. He said that these two countries are taking advantage of the status being received by the World Trade Organization and they will not allow it to happen.
According to news agency PTI, Trump has described the South Asian country as the leading country in the imposition of tariffs. Significantly, the trumps follow the policy of America First and they have also been criticizing India for imposing higher tariffs on American products.
It is worth noting that earlier, the US President had asked the World Trade Organization on what basis he gives the status of a developing country to a country. The motive behind the trump is that it can separate China, Turkey and India, which are benefiting from the global trade rules. Trump said, “They (India and China) have been taking advantage of us for years.” He also hoped that the WTO would treat the US fairly.
At the same time, the US President has told the business representatives of his country that if any developed economy takes advantage of the shortcomings of the WTO, then they should take punitive action against them.
Addressing a gathering on Tuesday, Trump had said, “Asia’s two major economies, India and China, are no longer a developing country and cannot benefit from the WTO.” Both these countries are benefiting from the WTO by acquiring the status of a developing country and are harming America. ‘ Let us tell you that there is a trade war in China and America at this time.
