World Championship: Sindhu and Praneeth progress, Saina-Srikanth out: PV Sindhu and B.C. Sai Praneeth entered the quarter-finals of the BWF Badminton World Championship-2019 released in Tokyo, while Saina Nehwal, HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth were eliminated from the competition.
World number five Sindhu defeated World No. 10 Beiwen Zhang of America 21-14 21-6 in the third round. Sindhu, who won silver in 2017 and 2018 and bronze in 2013 and 2014, finished the match in 34 minutes.
The second seed in front of Sindhu in the quarter-finals will be the challenge of Chinese Taipei’s Tai Xu Ying, against whom the Indian player holds a record of 4-10. Saina, who won bronze in 2017 and silver in 2015, was beaten 15-21, 27-25, 21-12 by Denmark’s Mia Bleukfeld. After winning the first game in the match that lasted for one hour and 12 minutes, Saina lost the next two games and the match.
In the men’s singles, Praneeth defeated Antony Sinisuka Giting of Indonesia to enter the championship quarter-finals. The 16th seed Praneeth defeated the sixth seed Giting 21-19, 21-13. Praneeth won the match in 42 minutes.
With this victory, world number-19 Praneeth has recorded a 3-2 against world number-8 Giting. In the quarter-finals, Praneeth will face a challenge to overcome fourth seed Indonesia’s Jonathan Cristili, against whom Praneeth holds a record of 1-2.
Meanwhile, HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth had to face defeat. Prannoy was defeated by world number-1 player Kento Momota of Japan in the third round. Top seed Momota defeated Prannoy 21-19 21-12 in a tough match.
At the same time, Srikanth could not overcome the challenge of Thailand’s Kantafon Vancharoen. The seventh seed of the tournament defeated Srikkanth 21-14 21-13 in 40 minutes.
