IPL 2020: Gautam Gambhir Says if the IPL is canceled, on what basis should Dhoni be selected in the team?
Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir, who was a member of the World Cup winning team, believes that if IPL 2020 is canceled due to Corona virus, then former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s return to Team India will be difficult. Gambhir also questioned on what basis Dhoni should be selected in the team.
Dhoni was about to return to the cricket ground from the IPL, but due to the deadly corona virus spreading from China, this prestigious T20 league was currently postponed till 15 April. Now due to the lockdown and in view of the increasing number of infected in the country, the IPL event is also being feared.
Dhoni has not played any competitive cricket match since the ICC World Cup last year. In such a situation, Gambhir asked what performance would be the basis for Dhoni’s selection for the ICC T20 World Cup to be held in Australia this year.
Former Indian cricketer and selector Dilip Vengsarkar has shared an interesting story behind the talent hunt of this superstar player. The 2006 to 2008 tenure of Vengsarkar as the chairman of the selection committee became a yardstick for the selectors as Dhoni became the captain while he was the selector.
Vengsarkar was associated with TRDW, who searched Dhoni
The 64-year-old Vengsarkar believes that he succeeded in doing justice to the post of chairman of the selection committee because he was associated with the TCCI’s Talent Research Development Department (TRDW) which explored the talent of cricketers like Dhoni.
Dhoni joined TRDW in 21 years
Vengsarkar said that Dhoni was included in the TRDW scheme at the age of 21 while the age of 19 was fixed for it. Vengsarkar told that there is a very interesting story behind it.
Dhoni was repeatedly sending the ball outside the stadium
Vengsarkar said that Dhoni was included in it at the behest of former Bengal captain Prakash Poddar. Poddar went to watch an under-19 match in Jamshedpur. He was playing the ODI match of Bihar at the nearby Keenan Stadium and the ball was coming out of the stadium again and again. After this Poddar wondered who was hitting the ball so far. When he found out, he came to know about Dhoni.
Dalmia made TRDW, now closed
He said, “Dhoni was made a part of the TRDW program at the age of 21 at the behest of Poddar.” He said that TRDW was started by former president Jagmohan Dalmiya. However, it was discontinued after Dalmiya lost the election.
Match against pak got recognition
Dhoni had made his career debut against Bangladesh, but he got recognition from Visakhapatnam ODI against Pakistan in 2005. On 5 April 2005, Mahendra Singh Dhoni played many brilliant shots during his century in Visakhapatnam. Dhoni scored 148 off 123 balls in the match and hit 4 sixes, 15 fours. It was here that Dhoni got recognition and he became involved in world cricket upon seeing it.
Gambhir told a private TV channel, “If Dhoni is not playing cricket for the last about a year, on what basis will he be selected. Dhoni’s best option right now is Lokesh Rahul.
Gambhir, the current Lok Sabha MP from East Delhi, praised Rahul, saying, ‘He is a useful player for the team. I have seen his performance. There is no doubt that his wicketkeeping is not as good as Dhoni but if you look at the T20 cricket format, he is a multi-player player. He can also bat at No. 3 or 4.
He said, ‘Team India would like all players to show their best. If there is no IPL, then Dhoni’s return will be very difficult. He has not been representing the team for a long time.
The 39-year-old former cricketer said, “As far as his retirement is concerned, it is his personal decision.” There has been a lot of speculation about Dhoni’s retirement as well. Earlier, former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar had said that Dhoni should have retired only after the 2019 World Cup.
